The former 250cc World Champ has had a very disappointing stint with Marlboro Ducati, often struggling to break the top ten as well as being perpetually out-shined by current teammate, Casey Stoner (other than on rare occasions like Brno, where Melandri clinched a 7th place and Casey crashed out into a DNF result).
Melandri is a capable racer, and many other riders have stated that the Ducati is a unique bike which some riders mesh with, and others simply cannot control. He also states that he admires John Hopkins' skill, and believes that intra-team competition would drive both riders' race day results upwards.
